"'' My father, '' says Haydée, raising his head, ` `was an illustrious man whom Europe knew under the name of Ali-Tebelin, pasha of Janina, and before whom Turkey trembled. '' Ali Pacha, character used as a secondary dramatic spring in Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, reappears almost twenty years later under the pen of Dumas, in a historical chronicle which is entirely devoted to it and which, until today unpublished in French, is printed in Italian in L'Indipendente, Neapolitan newspaper of Dumas, between October and December 1862. Its genesis is marked by the corner of extravagance: seduced by letters sent to him by " HH Prince Georges Castriote Skanderberg, president of the Greco junta - Albanian (And which we publish in the appendix), Alexandre Dumas, barely recovered from his epic alongside Garibaldi, ignites for the cause of the independence of Greece and Albania, multiplying moreover in his newspaper the articles relating to the Greek question, until a cruel disillusionment dissipates the political glamor.
