Growing up in the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's Main character is Jake. In his adolescent years he befriends George and Ruby, two hard drinking Indians. George is a World War one veteran. Even in his drunken state he teaches Jake how to fish. Jake has a girlfriend Barb and her older sister, Betty. Also, a friend Shine all four go skinny dipping from time to time. Jake has to fight others who try to rape Barb. They get separated and eventually Jake has other girlfriends, that are called River Rats. He learns to run George's gill net gas boat.
