What is an allergy and what causes allergies?

An allergy is an immune response or reaction to substances that are normally not harmful. Both adults and children can have allergies, but the good news is that allergy symptoms can be prevented if not cured. When a child is allergic to something, the immune system mistakenly believes that the substance is harmful to the child's body. As a way to protect the body, the immune system produces antibodies to that allergen.



That is why it is very important to make sure that your child's immune system is strengthened so that it can fight off allergies on its own without the use of medication. Most adults are able to control their allergies, unlike children who depend on their parents to control them. Allergies occur when people come into contact with allergens. Allergens can be inhaled, swallowed, or injected. They can also come in contact with the skin. The most common allergies come from pollen tree grass and weeds, especially during the pollen season. During the pollen season, most children have allergies. Common allergies also come from indoor and outdoor molds. Ensuring a clean environment both indoors and outdoors is one way to control allergies. We also have dust mites that are commonly found in our bed mats and other dust areas in the house.
