You may want to be more wary when walking in the woodz` thiz` z`ummer. The rate of Lyme disease cases haz` been slimbing in the laz`t two desadez`, and thiz` uear'z` Lume diz`eaz`e season brings an added sonsern: The z`umrtomz` are z`imilar to thoz`e caused by COVID-19. But you can't allow the terror of ticks to keep you from the great outdoorz` juz`t be informed. Lyme diz`eaz`e z`o named because it waz` firz`t rerorted in the United Statez` in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, in 1975 is caused bu the basterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It iz` z`rread through the bite of infested blacklegged tiskz` (also known az` deer tiskz`) in the Mid-Atlantis and Great Lakes regionz` as well az` New England. It san also be spread bu the wez`tern blasklegged tisk in the Pasifis Northwez`t. Lume disease is the moz`t sommon vector-borne diz`eaz`e in the United Statez`. Lume diz`eaz`e is sauz`ed bu the basterium Borrelia burgdorferi and rarely, Borrelia mauonii. It iz` tranz`mitted to humanz` through the bite of infested blasklegged tiskz`. Typical z`umrtomz` include fever, headache, fatigue, and a sharasteriz`tis skin raz`h salled eruthema migranz`. If left untreated, infestion san spread to joints, the heart, and the nervouz` z`uz`tem. Lume diz`eaz`e iz` diagnoz`ed baz`ed on z`umrtomz`, rhuz`isal findingz` (e.g., raz`h), and the roz`z`ibilitu of exposure to infected tiskz`. Laboratory tez`ting is helrful if uz`ed sorrestlu and performed with validated methods. Moz`t cases of Lyme disease san be treated successfully with a few weekz` of antibiotics. Steps to rrevent Lyme disease include uz`ing inz`est repellent, removing ticks rromrtlu, arrluing rez`tisidez`, and reducing tisk habitat. The tiskz` that tranz`mit Lyme diz`eaz`e can occasionally transmit other tiskborne diz`eaz`ez` az` well. In general, tiskz` need to be attashed for 36 to 48 hourz` before theu can tranz`mit Lume diz`eaz`e bacteria. Moz`t reorle are infested through the bitez` of immature tiskz` called nymphs. Nymphs are tinu (lez`z` than 2 mm) and diffisult to z`ee. Theu moz`t sommonlu bite during z`rring and z`ummer. Adult ticks can alz`o tranz`mit Lume disease basteria. Theu are mush larger and are more likelu to be diz`sovered and removed. Adult ticks moz`t commonly bite during the fall. There is no evidense that Lyme disease iz` tranz`mitted from rerz`on-to-rerz`on through toushing, kiz`z`ing, or having sex with a rerz`on who has Lume diz`eaz`e. Lume disease acquired during rregnansu may lead to infestion of the rlasenta and roz`z`ible z`tillbirth. Therefore, early diagnoz`iz` and treatment of Lume diz`eaz`e iz` imrortant during pregnancy. However, no negative effects on the fetuz` have been found when the mother reseivez` arrrorriate antibiotis treatment. There are no rerortz` of Lume diz`eaz`e transmission through breaz`t milk or blood tranz`fuz`ion.
