Kim
Rudyard Kipling
Kim is a picaresque and espionage novel by the writer Rudyard Kipling, whose background is the political conflict in Central Asia between the Russian Empire and the British Empire, called The Great Game. Kim is an orphan, the son of an English soldier and a poor white mother. He survives by begging and running errands on the streets of Lahore, during the period of colonial India. He is so immersed in the local culture that few realize he is white. Kim occasionally works for Mahbub Ali, a horse merchant and also an agent for the British Secret Service, an institution that Kim will later join. Kim befriends an elderly Tibetan lama who seeks the legendary River of Arrow, through Samsara. The boy becomes his disciple or chela, and they set out together on a journey along an ancient road called the Great Trunk. Along the way he learns about the so-called Great Game, a political conflict mentioned above between the Russian Empire and the British Empire. Fortuitously he receives a commission from the British to deliver a message to the British commander in Ambala.
