Coriolanus depends on the existence of the unbelievable Roman pioneer Caius Marcius Coriolanus. The play opens in Rome not long after the removal of the Tarquin lords. There are riots in advancement, after stores of grain were retained from normal residents. The agitators are especially furious at Caius Martius, a splendid Roman general whom they fault for the grain being removed.
