When this book happened, I was living in a very poor coal town in eastern Kentucky. This book begins in about 1950. The boy I married beat me regularly and made me pregnant frequently, left me alone most of the time, with no kerosene to heat the small house we lived in. I had 3 children before I was out of my teens and 5 children but age 24. Although scared to death, a miracle happened and I was able to escape at age 27 with my 5 children. I had never worked, never drove a car but I managed to take care of my 5 kids.
