Hognose snake, (genus Heterodox), any of three species of North American no venomous snakes belonging to the circle of relatives Colubridae. They're named for the upturned snout that is used for digging. Those are the innocent however frequently-avoided puff adders, or blow snakes, of North the USA. When threatened, they flatten the head and neck, and then strike with a noisy hiss-rarely biting.
