A Tale Of Two Cities
Charles Dickens
A Tale Of Two Cities: Annotated by Charles Dickens Charles Dickens is well known for highlighting the poor's misery and injustices, which are commonly perpetrated by society's wealthy and callous upper crust. We see the good and the bad and the transformation of one person, which is the novel's main element. This long Victorian novel follows the beautiful, kindhearted Lucie Manette and the people whose lives she touches, particularly her father, Dr Alexandre Manette, who was imprisoned in the Bastille for 18 years and driven nearly insane; Sidney Carlton, a cynical English barrister, and Charles Darney, a French emigrant. The notorious Defarges, a husband and wife who join the revolutionary cause and, especially Madame Defarge, descend into bloodthirsty supporters of Madame Guillotine, are introduced.
