In 1927 Paris, with her art dealer husband Stephan (Anthony Higgins) jailed for dealing in contraband works, India-born Marya Zelli (Isabelle Adjani) had no recourse but to turn to his acquaintances, the older and eccentric British couple H.J and Lois Heidler (Alan Bates, Maggie Smith).
