Based on the novel by Ian McEwan, this film traces the lives of four children who are traumatised first by the death of their father, and then the sudden demise of their mother. Fearful they may be put into care, they bury their mother in a cement filled trunk in the cellar and attempt to maintain a normal life. But when the older brother and sister fall into an incestuous affair, family life quickly deterioates and their secret seems likely to be revealed.
