An opera produced in 1963 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the People's Republic of China, The East Is Red depicts the history of the Chinese Revolution, beginning with the 1926 Northern Expedition against feudalism and Western imperialism. The production in Beijing that was recorded here involved over 3,000 workers, students, and peasants. Liner notes include the libretto, song explanations, commentary on the significance of the opera, and a chronology of the Chinese Revolution.
