This was Garland Jeffreys' underappreciated magnum opus; 'City Kids' rips your heart out, 'If Mao Could See Me Now' is wistful and poignant, 'Shoot The Moonlight Out' is one of the best love laments songs of the decade and while 'Living for Me' is a homage to resilience and survival in tough times, the finale 'Matador' is pure gospel longing and bittersweet hope. 'American Boy and Girl' culminates Jeffreys seventies work with an apocryphal masterpiece.
