John Coltrane
“Coltrane Jazz” is the first album to hit the shelves after ‘Giant Steps’. The recordings were made in November and December 1959. With the exception of ‘Village Blues’, which was not recorded until the end of 1960, Coltrane played with pianist Wynton Kelly and the Miles Davis rhythm section: Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The moody “Village Blues” features McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums and Steve Davis on bass – much of the lineup that, with Jimmy Garrison (bass), would form the foundation of Coltrane's most influential and beloved albums from the 1960s.
