Cheb Khaled, better known by his mononym Khaled, is an Algerian musician, singer and songwriter born in the 'birthplace of Rai', the coastal city of Oran, Algeria. Musically he grew up with Egyptian, Spanish and French music added with some western influences like the Beatles, Bob Marley and James Brown. With a blend of funk, reggae and Arabic music, Khaled soon pioneered the transformation of Rai from a local style to worldwide popularity by adding a synthesizer and drum machine. Known as the "King of Rai", Khaled is a winner of numerous awards, and has sold over 81 million albums worldwide. One of his signature hits is "Aïcha", a song written by the French singer songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman. The original French single was never released in an album.
