In an era of increasing anti-immigrant sentiment and bigotry, each of these thirteen stories illuminates the issues affecting the Mexican community and shows the breadth of a frequently stereotyped population. Regardless of status, many are subjected to rights violations, inequality, and violence'Äîall of which existed well before the Trump administration'Äîand have profound feelings of being unwanted in the country they call home. We meet Monica Robles, the undocumented mother of three US citizens who is confined to a twenty-seven-mile strip of territory between two checkpoints; Daniel Rodriguez, the first undocumented immigration lawyer in Arizona to obtain a license to practice; Jeanette Vizguerra, who came to symbolize the sanctuary movement after taking shelter in a Denver church to avoid deportation; Alberto Mendoza, who suffered persecution as a gay man and founded Honor 41, a national Latina/o LGBTQ organization; as well as nine other Mexicans living in the US who have powerful and diverse stories.
