Skull Snaps
Skull Snaps's legacy isn't defined by a prolific catalogue or the longevity of their career. In fact, this album from 1973 is the group's only album, yet it was enough to earn them a place as one of the more mysterious and fascinating funk ensembles of the era. Previously known as The Diplomats, they became Skull Snaps after several notable releases (including ‘She's The One’), and their self-titled album is nine tracks of gruff, unpolished vocals, crisp drums and driving pace that hasn't diminished with age. ‘I'm Your Pimp’ echoes the jazz-funk fusion sound of Blaxploitation cinema, while the single ‘Snapped’ is fueled by a tough horn break. But the real jewel here is ‘It's A New Day’, the group's signature song, with an unmistakable opening drum break that has become a staple ingredient of hip hop cuts by Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Das EFX, Eric B. & Rakim, Digable Planets, DJ Shadow and countless others. This much-bootlegged lost classic album is now available as an official special edition double LP in deluxe paste-on gatefold packaging, with a sheet of die cut stickers and a giant 24” x 24” poster of the original
