I was born in 1921, into the lowest strata of the, then, British caste system, but I didn't mind that my society didn't think much of me, as I didn't think much of them either.



Eventually I realised that I had received a fine inheritance, a strong constitution and an unneedy 'Old Maid' temperament!



I walked a while with pleasure

She chattered all the way

But left me none the wiser

For all she had to say

I walked a while with sorrow

And not a word said she

But, oh, the many things I learned

When sorrow walked with me!
