The novel follows Dashwood's three sisters because they must move with their widowed mother from Norland Park, where they grew up. Since Norland passed on to Mr. Dashwood's first marriage, John and his youngest son, the four Dashwood women needed to find a new home. They had the opportunity to rent a simple house, Barton Lodge, on the property of a distant relative, Sir John Middleton. They experience love, romance and heartbreak there. The novel may be set between 1792 and 1797 in southwest England, London and Sussex. The novel was sold out in 1813, and the first edition printed 750 copies, marking the success of its author. The second printing was carried out later that year. This is the first Austin title reissued in the UK after Austin's death, and the first illustrated Austin title produced in the UK in 1833 in Richard Bentley's standard novel series. Ding.
