Although it has some comic characters and others with a comic name, Middlemarch is a realistic novel. Through the words and opinions of the different characters we realize the great events of the moment: MISS BROOKE, OLD AND YOUNG, WAITING FOR DEATH, THREE LOVE PROBLEMS, THE DEAD HAND, THE WIDOW AND THE WIFE, TWO TEMPTATIONS. It gives us information about the advances of medicine in those years and we also run into the deeply reactionary attitude of an established community facing the possibility of what for many of them were unwanted changes. The eight books that make up the novel are not autonomous entities as they reflect the fascicle format in which they were originally published. A short prologue introduces the idea of a modern Saint Teresa anticipating the character of Dorothea. The epilogue tells us the fate of the main characters.
