The protagonist, Laura, narrates how her life goes from placid and calm to disconcerting and frightening when Carmilla, a beautiful and enigmatic young woman, appears. Laura, the protagonist of the story, is a young woman who lives with her father and some servants in an old castle in the remote parts of Styria (Austria). She often, she remembers when she was a child and she was asleep in the arms of a young girl and woke up from her by feeling two needles in her chest. Her life takes a turn when, in front of the castle where they live, a lady's carriage suffers an accident, and her daughter, who was also riding in it, is knocked unconscious. As the lady could not waste time and she had to follow her journey, the young woman is received at Hollis Castle until her mother returns to look for her. Laura and the young woman, Carmilla, become friends, despite the fact that the new tenant shows oddities in her behavior: she wakes up after noon and locks herself in her room without showing signs of being in it.
